The Key to Success {in business and life}...RELATIONSHIPS!

Lately, I've been thinking about how important relationships are in my life. I once read about how we are concerned with different things each decade of our lives.

.From birth to 10, it's all about mom, dad and family.
.From 10-20, it's more about finding yourself, defining yourself and having fun.
.From 20-30, you start thinking about the future, education, marriage and life choices.
.From 30-40, you think about climbing the ladder, making money, being successful in your field, advancing your career and raising your family.
.From 40-50, you start thinking about how to expand the success you have and just a little about the long-term future.
.From 50-60, health starts playing a role in your thinking as well as pre-retirement planning.
.From 60-70, health becomes a more major factor in your thinking as well as retirement.
.From 70 on, it's all about either staying healthy or how to fix the health problems you have.

I believe we need to nurture relationships during each of these stages of our lives to be healthier and happier. Unfortunately, we often don't realize this until we are older and have no friends or family that have a close relationship with us because we have not paid attention to them.

In the end, it's the relationships you have that are important and financial success becomes much less important.

As we have gotten older, friends and family have become much more precious to us. We work harder at staying in touch and we make sure we spend time doing things together. And I say work because, at times, it is work to carve out time when you don't really have it or to cook for someone else when you are really busy. But, it is so worth it.

And in business, building strong relationships with your clients is the foundation for success, now more than ever.

No longer can we sit back, holding our clients at arm's length, and expect them to keep coming to us. Now, more than ever, it is important to congratulate your clients on things happening in their lives, stay in touch when you don't have to or simply drop a note to them now and then.

Barriers that used to keep a wall between us and our clients are no longer acceptable.

AUTHENTICITY IS NOW EXPECTED.

We are doing more personal things with our clients and thinking differently than we ever have before in our business. We are building friendships, even going to lunch or dinner with them! It is absolutely the right time for this change in our thinking and we are enjoying it.

"When you get down to it, there’s no substitute for the quality of your relationships over the long haul. That’s what will keep the work coming through your door–again and again and again–for years to come."
