The Waiting Room

The Waiting Room

One of the hardest parts of building a new, small business is learning to become comfortable in the waiting room.

The waiting room is where your brand is finding its identity. It’s where your work begins to gain recognition. It’s where you discover who you truly want to serve—and just as importantly, who you don’t.

Many photographers become impatient during this stage. They try a little of everything, hoping something will stick. They chase trends. They listen to every opinion. They constantly change direction. PLUS, as creatives often do, they are constantly chasing the shiniest objects, fracturing focus on what is important.

That almost always delays success rather than accelerates it.

The strongest brands we’ve seen have one thing in common: clarity. They know exactly what they want to do, who their "perfect" soon-to-be client is, and what they do NOT want to do. That is as important as knowing what you DO want to do.

Along the way, you’ll hear countless voices telling you which direction to go. Some will sound exciting. Some will promise quick results.

The question is, Which voice aligns with the vision you have for your business?

So now what?

  • Develop an unquenchable thirst to learn.
  • Read.
  • Attend workshops.
  • Invest in education.
  • Seek mentors whose businesses reflect where you hope to be.

The more you learn, the better your decisions become.

Will that journey always be the quickest?

Probably not.

Will it always be the most enjoyable?

Not necessarily.

There will be growing pains. But those pains usually mean you’re building something with a solid foundation instead of chasing shortcuts.

One of the most damaging mistakes we see is offering too much. Every new specialty, every trend, every “yes” can slowly dilute your brand.

"Narrow your focus to broaden your appeal."

-Michael Gerber

Become known for something. Excellence is remembered far longer than variety.

And whatever you do…

Don’t compete by discounting.

Lower prices rarely create loyal clients. Instead, create value. Offer an unexpected gift with purchase. Provide an extraordinary experience. Surprise your clients with thoughtful touches that reinforce the quality of your brand rather than making it feel inexpensive.

And most importantly, create relationships with your clients. Treat them as family.

Finally, resist the temptation to take shortcuts just to see faster results.

We’ve learned that it’s much easier to point a ship in the right direction from the beginning than it is to turn a large ship after it’s already miles off course.

Build your business the way a great franchise is built—with clearly defined standards, consistent processes, intentional decisions, and a purpose behind everything you do.

The waiting room isn’t wasted time.

It’s where great brands are quietly being built.

Trust the process. Stay the course. Your future clients are watching long before they ever walk through your door.
